About Sarah
Over four decades as a nurse and a health visitor Sarah Beeson’s career has been shaped by the needs of children. Since her earliest days on the wards of Hackney Hospital she has stood up for her patients as shown in The New Arrival her true story of training to be a nurse in 1970s London.

Her expertise and innovation have been recognised with the MBE from the Queen for services to children and families, and her health prevention work received the Queen’s Nursing Institute Award but she’s happiest listening to mums talking about their baby. Sarah firmly believes that this generation of parents is the best there has ever been. Her parenting book Happy Baby, Happy Family: Learning to trust yourself and enjoy your baby (published by HarperCollins) is the culmination of a life time’s experience watching, listening and being part of thousands of families’ journeys from birth to their Little One’s first birthday.

The inspiration for putting pen to paper was the arrival of her own grandchild. Sarah now works with her daughter, writer Amy Beeson. You can find out more about Sarah life as a newly qualified health visiting in her heartwarming fun memoir Our Country Nurse.

Uncovering new stories

Author Amy Beeson at William Salt Library on Eastgate Street, Stafford Records Office

“I’m still in the early stages of writing my first solo novel but the Stafford Records Office have been invaluable,” said Amy who attended Blessed William High School and grew up in the village of Great Haywood and now lives in London.

“The archivists at the Stafford Records Office helped me find records, microfilm, maps and photos – it feels like playing detective in a spy film sometimes. You never know what you’ll uncover,’ teased Amy.

“I spent hours pouring through newspapers at the William Salt Library. I’m fascinated by the photos, stories and advertisements of the time. My favourite is definitely the classified ads.”

Getting hands on with collections

“I spent a thrilling morning with Melanie Williamson at the County Museum in Shugborough. Seeing a wedding dress worn by a bride at Colwich Parish Church was a very special moment.”

Amy has made special visits to The National ArchivesImperial War Museums and The National Trust Collection at Shugborough as part of her research.

What’s nicer then curling up with a good book during autumn. Here’s what we’ve been reading…

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood

‘Sometimes I whisper it over to myself: Murderess. Murderess. It rustles, like a taffeta skirt along the floor.’ Grace Marks. Female fiend? Femme fatale? Or weak and unwilling victim? Around the true story of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the 1840s, Margaret Atwood has created an extraordinarily potent tale of sexuality, cruelty and mystery.

True Love at the Lonely Hearts Bookshop by Annie Darling

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman in possession of a good job, four bossy sisters and a needy cat must also have want of her one true love. Or is it?

Verity Love Jane Austen fangirl and an introvert in a world of extroverts is perfectly happy on her own (thank you very much), and her fictional boyfriend Peter is very useful for getting her out of unwanted social events. But when a case of mistaken identity forces her to introduce a perfect stranger as her boyfriend, Verity’s life suddenly becomes much more complicated.

The Woman at 72 Derry Lane by Carmel Harrington

On a leafy suburban street in Dublin, beautiful, poised Stella Greene lives with her
successful husband, Matt. The perfect couple in every way, Stella appears to have it all.
Next door, at number 72 however, lives Rea Brady. Gruff, bad-tempered and rarely seen
besides the twitching of her net curtains, rumour has it she’s lost it all…including her
marbles if you believe the neighbourhood gossip.

But appearances can be deceiving and when Stella and Rea’s worlds collide they realise
they have much in common. Both are trapped in a prison of their own making. Has help been next door without them realising it? Read Author Amy Beeson’s book review of The Woman at 72 Derry Lane.

Enter to Win

When you ask a question during our Facebook Live you’ll be entered to win a copy of Sarah Beeson’s first year baby advice book Happy Baby, Happy Family and a pack of Faye & Lou muslins.

Why We Love Faye & Lou

We first came across Faye & Lou muslins at The Baby Show and have been big fans ever since. We often give these beautiful bright and colourful 100% cotton muslins as a new baby gift to friends and family.

A muslin is such a useful gift and can be used to mop up spills and as an extra layer. We’ve heard back from the many mums we’ve given them to that they don’t fad in the wash and when you’re in a group you don’t get them mixed up when you have a colourful muslin and everyone else’s is a dull white!

Where white muslins can become grey after a few uses, Rainbow muslins stay bright and colourful. Pastel Star Muslins: Lilac, Violet & Pink – 3 Pack is worth £11.95, Size – 60 cm x 60 cm, 100% cotton, Machine washable at 40c. (The colours are colorfast and will not fade)

Ask Sarah your questions and enter to win at our next Facebook Live Q&A on Tuesday 3 October.
